Founders' Memorial - Take a leaf from North Korea

Singapore is setting aside 5 hectares of prime land in the heart of the new downtown city at Gardens by the Bay dedicated to our founding fathers. They deserved to be sited in the choicest part of the island. Somehow I got this uncomfortable feeling that 5 hectares may be too small to honour them. We need something more grandeur. Cost is not an issue. On that, with our good relations with North Korea and Kim Jong Un, I would recommend that Singapore send a team to North Korea to study how they honoured their great dear leaders. The North Koreans are perhaps the best in this area and their expertise is well recognised in Africa with many African states commissioning them to build gigantic statues of their founding fathers as well. This is one of their main exports and major source of foreign income.

Our westernised and heavily American influenced thinking may be satisfied with a library or a warship named after a President. We could do that and also copy from the North Koreans, taking the best from the East and West. The North Koreans are the best.

Here are some comments in the CNA on this historical project.

'The memorial site will include a garden, within which an indoor gallery will be built, the Founders’ Memorial committee said in a press release on Friday (Oct 19)....

The memorial will focus on stories and events in Singapore’s growth as a nation, the committee said, adding that it aims to take visitors on a journey that is “moving and inspiring, educational and reflective”.
"It intends to also capture the context for key milestones in Singapore’s nation-building history, the experiences and dilemmas of our leaders which shaped their values and principles, and how these affected their actions, policy deliberations and decisions," the committee said.'

Now you see why I said cost is not an important factor. It can be turned into a tourist attraction as well and the revenue would be enough to cover for its cost and general upkeep and maintenance, just like the two indoor gardens in the same area. And why bigger space, cause you need to prepare for the crowd, locals and tourists, to bring in tourist dollars. The visitors to North Korea never failed to take photographs of their dear leaders when in North Korea.

Singapore is always very particular about cost and returns and would not simply blow away money unnecessarily. If there were such incidents, they were anomalies and very few in between. Every project must be revenue generating, profit generating, like GIC and Temasek and our world best DBS and POS Banks. See how successful are our tourist sites like Sentosa and Haw Par Villa, capturing the tourists with their creative ideas.

I can imagine the long queues at least for the first few months of its opening to take a look at this new tourist attraction and to honour our founding fathers at the same time.

PS. If I let my imagination go wild I would like to see twelve 50m statues of founding fathers over looking the Padang and floating platform. In that way they could see the NDP every year, the fruit of their labour and sacrifice. A twelve statue monument would rival the statues in Easter Island and could earn the title of the 12th Wonders of the World. This would be money well spent as it would be income generating from tourists all over the world flocking here to see this new wonders. Definitely more fascinating than the Jewel in Changi.

Hi

The area of 5 hectares of prime land in the heart of the new downtown city at Gardens by the Bay dedicated to our founding fathers is tooooooooooooo small.

We should triple the area.

Want to do..............do it BIG lah!

What we have is...........$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

Correct?

And a lot of land.

Yes, having huge statues is very important. I would think it should be statues of LKY form when he was young to his last days, showing his various involvement in the "founding of Singapore.
It should preferably be completed by end 2019, or just before the next GE.
Hahahahaha…...

I think the whole idea is to honour one person, but that will be too 'pai sei', so founding fathers is less prominent a name.

You see Ox Lee is too controversial, so must be something less debatable.

I think it should be based on Yakasuni Shrine. It will be perfect for PAP supporters to worship.

It will be a big white elephant. In 5 years it will be a popular as Haw Par Villa.

Rb, to make it a tourist attraction and world wonder, 50 m will not do. Actually if u built it as at least a minimum 100 m or like a 100 storeys building height and built lift inside for people to go up to take city view, it will be great.😀😀😀

Not a bad idea. Seeing the city through the eyes of the twelve founding fathers, each one with a different perspective.

No lah.

It will not be a white elephant anonymous 905am.

Sg vry vry free. Many many people can stay there for the whole day.

It is in the design.

Wah. Not too many things make me angry...this one really does. Kanninabu chow cheebai...the PAP is fucking up my Hotel, my beloved, awesome, rocking hotel.

The PAP are going to turn this “tax-payer boondoggle” into:

-1. A fucking religious shrine, attempting to cast themselves as “heavenly custodians” of our lost cuntry. Motherfuckers! 😠 With the GE fast approaching this qualifies, IMO, as a blatant political advertisement, which according to my understanding has very strict guidelines. When (not “if”) the cocksucking local media media does a piece on it, it becomes a political film, which is prohibited. It’ll give the Holy PAP a huge advantage---they already have a huge advantage---whilst they “seek and destroy” any opposition who attempts to make films to oppose them.

-2 An artifact which goes against everything that Lee Kuan Yew (a man of ACTION not ICONOGRAPHY) stood for in terms of putting politicians on pedestals. Whether you like LKY or not, you have to appreciate that he NEVER advocated his image or statue of his likeness to be displayed every which where...not even on the currency. Note: this is a distinguishing difference from cuntries like North Korea where the leaders are immortalised in “deity status” all over the fucking place. In fact, LKY’s respect afforded to him was partly due to his dislike of symbolism and iconography. Although he was a man of many words, his propensity toward direct, objective-based ACTIONS backed up everything he believed in---although not all of it was “good”.

There is one statue of Raffles. Just make one statue of LKY, and be done with it.

I really detest this neurotic attachment to the past by uses of “symbols”. You want to learn about the history, we have the fantastic NLB and the National Archives for that.

I tell you, this “new PAP” are a bunch of total FUCKWITS who are systematically sabotaging all the good this cuntry has achieved.

Fuck them in their collective asses with a fistful of dirty chopsticks lah.😠😠

Matilah, they are just talking about a memorial lah. No talk about statues yet. The statue idea is just my wild imagination. I stress again, it is wild imagination so please no silly talks about spreading false news or fake news. I think they will be asking the people for feedback.

Maybe you can then share with them your thoughts. You can also tell them where you are going to pee.

For some "Siao Ting Tong" mental masturbeding about building statues, the following are some words into the insights of the thinking of one man on such "wasteful and facile" acts:

Quote

"Once, at the suggestion that a monument might be made for him, my grandfather replied, “Remember Ozymandias”. He was, of course, referring to Shelley’s sonnet about Ramses the Second, the greatest Pharaoh of the Egyptian empire. In the poem, a lone traveller encounters a broken statue in the desert. On the statue, the inscription, “My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!” Nothing beside remains.

I think his meaning was that, if Singapore does not persist, then a monument will be no help. And if Singapore does persists, then a monument will be unnecessary. And that assessment is accurate: His legacy is not cold stone, but a living nation. We could no more forget him than we could forget the sky."

Unquote

By Asst Professor Li Sheng Wu, Economics, Harvard University, 29 Mar 2015

The following the full "Ozymandias" poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley as mentioned in Prof Li Sheng Wu speech on 29 Mar 2015:

Ozymandias By Percy Bysshe Shelley

"I met a traveller from an antique land,

Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,

Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,

And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,

The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;

And on the pedestal, these words appear:

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;

Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

Opposition: "HDB should not include land prices as the land ownership is not transferred to the buyers."

PAPies: "This is robbing our reserves. There is an opportunity cost when we build HDB flats ... when the land can be sold to private developers or for commercial purposes for much higher profits."

Now....

5 hectares of prime land in downtown Singapore ... sup sup suay, peanuts lah. OK to rob S'pore reserves of a few hundred million dollars to have this mausoleum lah!

And who gets to build this mausoleum? Don't tell me glasslooters & companies with PAPies as CEOs, MDs, Chairman, Executive Directors, Board members horrr??

Another few millions of taxpayers money into PAPies pockets horrr??? After all, less than $500K is mediocre!!

@ RB

I know that (about your imagined statues). But 5 hectare of land...prime, precious one-of-a-kind land? They will be building something lah….probably big.

Yah, I hope people go there and pang sai.

These young fuckers who supposedly run the cuntry are really out of control.

There should not be any national shrine in Singapore. Don't ever put up a Yakasuni Shrine with Singapore characteristics. What purpose will it serve except to leverage political capital? Don't ever think of Stamford Raffles in the shrine. His name stinks. Raffles like any of the European marauding pirates just invaded Singapore for England. How can he be called the founder of Singapore when centuries before white men came there were already thriving communities of Malays, Chinese and Indians living in Singapore. It is just like the savage white men calling themselves the founders of the Americas where they brutally invaded and genocided all the millions of native Americans who had been living there for thousands of years and who had founded some of the great civilizations on earth.

It is better that Singapore found new sustaining industries to generate jobs and income for genuine blue Singaporeans. So far during the last few years we can only see incessant road digging, repairing and maybe some new roads. This generate jobs only for foreigners and benefit some contractors.

The country should produce some real work, real new industries for the benefit of the people and not do frivolus things to distract people from the real problems that the people are facing.

Lastly any serious claim to be the founder of Singapore should fall on the mythical "Sang Nila Utamaa.

In land-scarce Singapore, 5 hectares of prime land devoted to the founding fathers is a luxury the country can ill-afford. The exorbitant cost of building and maintaining do not benefit the hoi polloi. It is an abuse of scarce resources by the PAP government to immortalise themselves: past, present and future. Tourists want to see the Pyramids, the Taj Mahal, the 13 tombs of the Ming Emperors or the Teracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang but it is doubtful Singapore can outdo such attractions. The Founders' Memorial is likely to become a Mecca only for the MIW and their cronies.

Where is the $$$ going to come from? $50 million here, $100 million there, then either have to raise taxes or cut back spending on oldies health care liao etc, make them pay more for next visit to hospital? Increase all fees by 20% up? Oldies siao liao? CHAM!?

This project is to keep Singapore vibrant and attractive to entice tourist dollars, so they say. However the hidden agenda I suspect is to enhance the PAP grip to power. Got to build a legacy. In time to come more PAP names or statues will be added. Statues or names like LKY, GCT, LHL and others will be enshrined for ever and ever. This I think is the real reason for such an expensive project.

@ "money counters"

That's right. 50 mill is only ~1700 COEs @ ~$30k each. How much does a COE cost to "produce"? ZERO. Pure money printing for the state. @ 50k per COE, that's only 1000 or around 30 new cars per day.

Do we have the money? Fuck yeah, and then some! 🤑💲

So no need to rob the reserves. Robbing the people is so much simpler, not that it's difficult to rob the reserves.

We have 69.9% who gave a blank cheque to screw themselves. Dont know will they wake up?

Anonymous said...

When a committee determines the race of an Indian woman to Malay for blocking CB, go figure how super honorable the gang is?

Anonymous said...

The memorial is there to make sure the 69.9% never wake up and continue with their deep sleep. More than that, if they place someone's statue inside the memorial, looking down on the 69.9%, they dare not even fart.

Talking about the statue, plenty of suggestions were made years ago to put the statue of the 'God of no Mercy' at or near the esplanade. But then many had strange ideas of people spitting or urinating at the spot, and that is probably why the old man has a phobia of statues, especially when it can be spitted or urinated upon.

If they place statues inside the memorial, it will probably be guarded, so no spitting or urinating is expected. Plus the revenue to be collected of a heavy fine of $10K if caught urinating or spitting on top of the entrance fee. Plus make it mandatory that Singaporeans must visit the memorial at least once in a lifetime, using CPF for the entrance fee.

Think out of the box they say. The memorial will pay for itself with income from tourist and fines collected in the long run. It is a win win situation.

Singapore's most innovative economic enterprises are building cover walkways and arches in HDB estates, building more shopping centres and hawker centres. Most creative profession is hawking.

Most creative business is buying over other businesses with OPM, no need to think, no need to sweat the small stuff.

Most lucrative and productive business is to legislate CPF money to buy insurance schemes, as good as printing COEs.
