Survival in the most expensive city the daft way

On The Job as a heartland waste collector: A rancid, repulsive and sobering experience

In the series where Channel NewsAsia journalists try working in some of Singapore’s essential but undervalued jobs, Aqil Haziq Mahmud gets his hands dirty as a waste collector. He comes away with a deep respect for the workers who deal with the relentless flow of trash.

I don't know which was worse: The smell or the creepy crawlies. The stench of rotting food was like vomit mixed with dank, dirty laundry. I struggled not to retch. Then there were the bugs which scuttled everywhere as I bent down to pick up the trash.

Read more at https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/on-the-job-as-a-heartland-waste-collector-a-rancid-repulsive-and-9390486

The above are paragraphs of a report in CNA. This kind of jobs is never pleasant and very few Singaporeans would want to do unless they are desperate. But in this stupidity has no cure island, once I read a glowing report of a young professional claiming that he could retire in this most expensive island without having to work. And all he needed to do was to go crawling around the estates scavenging for leftovers and 'throwaways' to live by. I think this was shown on TV, giving it some kind of approval.

The most stupid of it all was that he was able to impress, convince and attract a bunch of young people to follow him around to dig into rubbish bins for rejected and leftovers or rotten/expired food items. The rancid stench and all the slime did not deter them from this nightly prowl in the wee hours of the morning.

I hope the young people have some common sense to know that this is not how to live their lives. They are not the uneducated Ah Bengs, some looked like undergrads. This is how stupid Sinkies have become, unthinking and anything novel is stylo milo.

Would this article in the CNA change their minds, or would they be more encouraged to go scavenging the rubbish bins at night as a new lifestyle?

RB, I do it everyday man! When you are poor. When you are desperate. There is no choice. But you will be surprised what I could find among the "rubbish" thrown away by idiots. A brand new set of cutlery. An ancient painting worth $1000s. A rare calligraphy art by the famous monk Hong Choon, LKY's consultant. Antiques of ancient made worth $thousands. Rare valuable books of collectors' quality. Even a set of gold earings!

Qatar’s support for the Turkish Lira is giving Ankara some breathing space; the natural gas powerhouse pledged $15bn in support of the Turkish currency.

Turkey offered its support to Qatar when a Saudi-led embargo isolated Doha in the spring of 2017.

The Lira has recovered 5% on Wednesday, having lost a cumulative 20% since last Friday.

The Lira has lost 30% of its value since January.

In the medium to long run, Turkey is still faced with galloping double-digit inflation, a deficit that exceeds $50bn and the imminent challenge of refinancing its sovereign debt amid surging bond yields.

Meanwhile, hopes that the economic standoff between Ankara and Washington will subside are dim. Turkey is seemingly uncompromising over US demands for the release of Evangelical pastor Andrew Brunson, whom Ankara detained in 2016 and was charged with terrorist connections to PKK and Fethullah Gulen.

The pastor is now under house arrest.

On Wednesday, Turkey signed a decree raising tariffs on US goods. US cars have been hit with a 120% tariff, alcoholic drinks by 140% and leaf tobacco by 60%. Tariffs will also affect US cosmetics, rice and coal. Meanwhile, the government is calling for a boycott.

Turkish authorities are taking measures to curb rumour-spreading by the press to undermine the country's economic situation.

@ RB

Again with the "virtue signalling" bullshit.

The job is dirty and stinky, and most people get sick just thinking of it.

But the individual in question obviously is used to the filth, and derives a sense of "satisfaction" from doing the work, and getting paid for his time, effort and "tahan-ability". You can see his enthusiasm as he beckons the young "never-get-hands-dirty" types of entitle-minded spoilt assholes to follow him on his work to "discover" stuff they were not even remotely aware about.

I don't know what such jobs pay in Singapore, but here in the Lucky Cuntry a "garbologist" or "garbo" (a contraction of the term) earns $30-40 per hour, (5-6k monthly) plus various allowances.

Of course the people who are ever-quick to criticise hard, unplesant work in an expensive city, and then blame the govt for the plight of those "unfortunates" whom they assume have "no other choice" is just COMPLETE BULLSHIT.

Few of these armchair critics have ever got their hands dirty for longer than a few minuts, if ever at all. Nevermind being splashed with the remnants of human activity on a daily basis.

They fail to realise and appreciate that our cuntry has a reputation for being clean because of people who pick up and clean up the filth geneated by an affluent society.

These holier-than-thou cunt-stains complain about every manner of phenomena that doesn't comport with their delusional "perfect world" view but nary an action is ever taken by these waste-of-oxygen spoilt brats to change things. They can't even go to the toilet without pissing and shitting everywhere. They purport to live in a 1st World Cuntry, but their public toilet behaviour would make even the lowliest Turd Whirled peasant gag on their UN Food Aid lunch. The public toilets of Singapore signal that the society has a long long way to go despite the appearance of being "civilized".

There is dignity to every job---even the most "lowly" like cleaning up after self-centered, lack-of-social-conciousness UGLY Singaporeans. There is nothing wrong with being "poor". Poor people who work hard are far superior to richer people who "virtue signal", assign blame as if they were almighty gods of philosophy.

Fuck Channel News Asia, and the rest of the MSM. May Trump fuck you all forever and ever, AMEN! 🇸🇬😂

Very sad that these workers are so lowly paid. In angmo countries, these jobs are highly paid. Only non angmo countries really know how to exploit until bones seen, nose bleed. No wonder God chose angmo to rule the world. Long live the Queen.

Anonymous said...

When S'pore MSM highlight all these jobs, they almost NEVER reveal the actual pay.

What for try to glorify hard essential jobs when S'pore only willing to pay at most $2K or even much lesser for such jobs?!?

Becoz of the ever-present overhang of aging population & rising medical costs, Shit Times came out with a story 1-2 weeks ago how come nursing in S'pore pays so little compared to HK and Oz and other developed countries??

E.g. Staff nurse in SG $3000 versus $6000 in Oz & HK.

Healthcare attendant in SG $1.5K or even $1K, versus $3K in Oz.

And this is after MOH has made extra raises to nursing salaries in govt sector over the last 5 years.

BUT then horrr .... S'pore MSM also got hidden message --- want to increase pay for such jobs --- Are you Sinkies willing to pay more? Be taxed more??

E.g. Now your monthly waste disposal is $8.25 (including GST). Are you willing to pay $24.75 for the garbage man to earn $5K-$6K??

Today C-class ward is $35 per day (max 80% subsidy). Are you willing to pay double for same C-class service in order for healthcare attendants to have $2.5K-$3K salary??

While Sinkies dig into rubbish bins for rejected and leftovers or rotten/expired food items and many elderly Sinkies commit suicide due to despair, foreign PMETs (more than 2 million here) sit in cozy offices drawing good salaries !

Thank you PAP !!

Anonymous said...

RB,

That guy who go around eating food from rubbish dumps, who call themselves freegan or freeloaders, not actually digging into cockroach-and-rat invested garbage dumps lah....

They target the supermarkets & bakeries who need to dispose of expired can food/vegetables/fruits or unsold daily bread/buns. Many of these stuff are nicely wrapped up in their own packaging or plastic/trash bags.

Some of the supermarkets & bakeries also know about these people, & they try to dispose of their expired food nicely for them to take.

Those freeloaders also target Pasir Panjang Wholesale Market --- to collect unsold vegetables & fruits. They usually collect so much that they need to drive lorry or van. Individual freeloaders will bring home whatever they need/want, but 80+% of the collected veges & fruits are donated to charities like those that provide free meals and those for foreign workers.

BTW, that guy not some high-level executive lah .... He was (still is??) insurance agent. He already said previously he was stressed out & depressed over finances & job & high cost of living. He then decided to simplify his life & follow this freeloader lifestyle. Claims he only need to spend $100-$200 a month. Obviously no European or even Oz holidays for him!

Whoever said...

The rubbish collectors at Town Council level are paid at least $3000 a month plus health-care benefits and longer annual leave than others. They usually work in a Team of 5 to 7 - one of whom is the superviser or team leader.

The rubbish truck-driver-cum-collector, who works in the wee hours, when everyone is asleep, is paid $4000 a month with similar health-care benefits and annual leave. He usually has one or two assistants to help him. The assistants are paid at least $2,500 to $3,000 a month with the same perks.

The higher pay than usual is to compensate for their hardship. Yet very few could last long in such jobs. The turn-over is very high.

Many of them worked for about four years and saved up about $100,000 to $150,000 and call it quits. With that amount of savings they go back to their homeland to start a comfortable new life as a shop-keeper or small-time businessman.

Sinkies are focusing on the wrong place especially on politics. When PAP lost Aljunied GRC, for the next few years life was much more bearable. Hardly any tariff or fee hikes, even the PM apologized n acknowledged they are servants n not lords. Even took pay cuts (albeit still have undisclosed bonuses).
After the big resounding victory since 2015 Election, there is like non stop fees n tariff hikes.
Sinkies indeed are so slow n retrad to understand this pattern.
A serious good dose of many more Parliament seats to Opposition especially nearly 50% will do wonder TO LOWER COSTS OF LIVING in Spore, since high costs are govt initiated n self inflicted from a highly costly govt n bureaucracy.
Hope in coming election Sinkies will prove "stupidity is no cure" is not Sinkied core value.
Dont worry Sinkies, the PAP has too many measures n advantages in place like yearly new citizens to vote for them. Even if 75% Sinkies vote Opposition Pappies will remain in power. No Fluke for this Monopoly lah.

But more bearable life will soon end when PAP retakes Aljunied GRC. Then it will be pay back time. More taxes, more suicides, more oldies collecting cardboards, and more money for ministers. This time there will be no holds barred for salary increases for ministers.

It will truly be 'more good years for ministers' and 'swish standard of living for Sinkies'.

And the 70% going to 75% will live happily ever after!

New York University, School of Medicine, will provide free tuition for all present and future students, the university announced.

Citing the risk of "overwhelming" debt, it says every student will qualify regardless of merit or financial need.

NYU said financial worries were driving graduates to more lucrative specialities, pushing doctors away from more general positions.

The scholarship covers annual tuition costs of up to $55,000 (£43,000).

A study produced by the Association of American Medical Colleges estimated that, in 2017, 75% of medical students graduated in debt.

In Singapore, 99% of medical students graduated in debts, except ministers' children and those on scholarship (mostly freeloader- foreigners).

Why PAP elite so eager to make the elderly hawkers and customers go cashless and incur transaction costs?

So that the elite can track the exact income of the hawkers and they cannot under-report earnings !

Also, just a 0.5% transaction fee levied on hawkers would bring in a huge amount of fees revenue as many people eat at hawker centers day and night.

The hawkers will pass the fee costs onto the customers, further raising the costs of living in the world's most-expensive-to-live country.

Anonymous said...

When you have cashless transactions with hawkers, they have to pay a fee for the cash card reader. Then hawkers have no more cash on delivery of food. It will be at least a fortnight later that they will see their sales collection paid to them by the card reading machine owners. Without the daily cash collection, how do hawkers pay their suppliers? They
will need at least three times the usual cash capital to run their business. Can they borrow from banks? If not, will the PAP elites help? I guess not. So, it must again be Ah Longs.

How much more will the hawkers need to charge customers, you tell me!

Hemlock's Musings:

Why Singapore Is Pathetic:

Updated 22 May 2005.

1. Singapore’s economic growth miracle of the 1960s-90s came mostly from added inputs, not from growth in productivity.
Hong Kong Singapore
Average growth p.a., 1960-85 6% 6%
Worker productivity increase: 150% 100%
Savings rate: 20% 40%
Change in output per capita, 0% -50%

In other words, Singapore had to invest twice as much as HK to produce the same level of output. To compensate for the poor productivity and diminishing returns of investments directed by the state, its people had to save twice as much as Hongkongers, and consume less. Pathetic.

2. Singaporeans don't really have the fundamental right to make their own investments. The Singapore government forces people to hand over up to 40% of their net income, and it invests most of it as it sees fit. The government “allows” people to individually direct only a small part of these forced savings (mainly into non-voting shares in state-owned enterprises). The government tells Singaporeans how lucky they are to be “allowed” to choose to use their savings for education, home purchase, medical coverage, etc – as if the money weren’t theirs in the first place. Pathetic.

3. This is therefore a planned economy, in which civil servants attempt to pick winners. As well as (mis)managing its people’s savings, Singapore’s government also arranges subsidies to encourage favoured industries. Needless to say, these subsidies are at the expense of other industries. For example, the rest of the economy has subsidized forex traders and fund managers (the last people who need a subsidy) in order to push Singapore higher up the list of international forex trading and fund management centers. The government sells this to its people as a “success”. Meanwhile, the government is ordering its state-owned business to expand beyond the little city state. In their desperation to become regional players, they are paying over the odds for assets of doubtful quality. Pathetic.

4. One big mistake made by the controllers of the Singaporean economy was to maintain a large manufacturing sector long after factories would otherwise have been moved to lower-cost sites (as they did in Hong Kong in the 1980s-90s). They have put their people’s wealth into direct investment into local manufacturers, or into tax breaks and other subsidies for inward manufacturing investment. It is therefore left with a large and increasingly unviable manufacturing base in such loser industries as semiconductors. Pathetic.

5. Faced with such mismanagement, most people would complain. Not Singaporeans. Their government effectively controls the media and runs a highly effective PR campaign aimed at convincing the people the government is wonderful. Many sincerely believe it. Those who don’t fall for it keep quiet, or wish they had. The few people who dare to speak out suffer reduced career prospects or even spurious legal action. Unlike Hongkongers, Singaporeans have no right, in practice, to walk down the street handing out anti-government leaflets and shouting anti-government slogans. It is a crime to speak in public without a permit. Pathetic.

Anonymous said...

6. Democracy is impossible without free speech. Singapore is therefore no more a democracy than Hong Kong (where the government is appointed by Beijing). However, Hong Kong at least allows an opposition to exist openly, and to present its views in independent media, without fear of persecution or harassment. In Singapore, opposition politicians who ask awkward questions can be (and have been) sued for libel by ruling politicians and convicted (and bankrupted) by a judiciary that is so efficient that it consistently sides with the government.

7. Constituencies that voted against the ruling party receive lower or no government funding for public facilities and upgrading, in vindictive retaliation for their lack of gratitude – in flagrant violation of the basic democratic principle that the government is accountable to all its people, not just its voters. Pathetic.

8. Singapore’s ‘father figure” was Lee Kuan Yew. One of his interests was eugenics. He believed that a more-intelligent population can be achieved through selective breeding, and at one stage Singapore encouraged people with high educational levels to marry each other, and it offered financial incentives for them to have children. (After hearing his ideas during a state visit, Britain’s Princess Anne said, “Well, Mr Lee, it doesn’t work with horses.”) Social engineering continues today, with the government, which used to go to great lengths to encourage people to have fewer babies, begging them to have more “if they can afford it”. This means “unless you’re Malay”. Singapore’s schools systematically leave Malays disadvantaged and stuck in low-paying jobs. They have also tried to attract more immigrants from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and India. Pathetic.

9. Singapore is famous for not being corrupt. It is true that if you are Lee Kuan Yew’s eldest son you can become brigadier general after just five years in the army, and six months later you can become a member of parliament, and soon after that you can become deputy prime minister. And then become the PM!!! And if you are the eldest son’s wife, you can be put in charge of the state holding company (it holds key interests in 40% of the stock market by market cap). And if you’re Lee’s number-two son, you can run the main Telecoms company. But that’s not corruption, nor nepotism. That is called “meritocracy”. (No, that's pathetic.)

10. Last but not least, International newspapers, magazines and writters have been banned for writing things not to the liking of the Singapore leaders or make them unhappy. Pathetic!

Anonymous said...

Eugenics does not always work in practice.

Sad to say, there are perfect examples of highly educated, intelligent people marrying equally highly educated intelligent people, but fail to produce the desired super off-springs, and in some cases even have handicapped children.

On the other extreme, there have been lowly educated parents producing highly intelligent children. Who is to say whether those lowly educated parents are not intelligent just because they never had a chance to go to graduate school?

It is dangerous to think we know much about nature and can tinker around with theories hoping to produce a super race. Likewise, we may now have gone too far with eating genetically modified food and have yet to know what long term effects this will have on us. They always tell us the good things, but purposely suppressed the bad. Until it is too late!

However, despite all that stuff---which is just political bullshit---Singapore still rocks and is AWESOME!

Plus, you can make decent bucks there.

I prefer to work with what I have. It is what it is. Yes, "pathetic" in certain areas. But not ALL areas. Still got more than a good chance!

Maybe, good news for all. Have to spread the goodies in advance as next year is just round the corner.

He may in one sweep reduced all already purchase HDB flats by 50%.

Also, lease be 999 years. As for the costs of living, every Sinkie be rewarded with one K per month for next twenty years just like the jackpot of Magnum life Sweep.

In Praise Of

PAP is still good lah. Overlook their negative side and embrace their positive propaganda lah.

They care for your young children in their childcare centres and help you defray your childcare fees by giving extra subsidies over and above what the government is giving, so that you are tempted to put your kids into their indoctrination centres lah.

They also help the oldies by giving monthly food supplement and yearly ang pow. And give them works to do so that they can live longer and contribute meaningfully to the GDP growth, in order to help ministers and top government officials enjoy bigger annual bonuses mah.

The PM is a compassionate person mah. He sees our PMETs so pathetically stupid and lazy. So he help them by importing millions of foreigners into Singapore to compete with them for jobs, especially the high paying lucrative jobs that no Singaporeans want or shy to take.

Also the PM is so kind and caring that he keeps increasing taxes so as to take care of the poor.

Moreover, the PM also cares for old retired Ministers and keep them employed and gives them titles such as ESM (Exposed Senility Minister), SM (Senile Minister) and MM (Moronic Minister) so that they can keep grumbling that Ministers are not paid enough, despite collecting Multi-Million Dollars every year. They are should actually be paid $Billions instead of $Millions, and if possible $Trillions so that they can bring along more money to help the dead souls the Netherworld when they die. Can you see how hardworking our old ministers are? They can even think of what to do after they die! Ain't that outstanding?

So much for now. Will continue when I am free.

Yes, I try to capitalise on opportunities which come my way. Existence, at the end of the day is probabilistic. No matter what you plan, no matter how on-the-bola you are, how smart you think you are....RANDOMNESS (good luck, bad luck) has the FINAL SAY.

So I've figured out, that if life awards you a "free kick", consider exploiting it to the max. If you act, there's an X chance of success and a (1-X) chance of failure. Not acting reduces you chance of success (and failure) to a big fat ZERO.

Dun worry mate, my relationships are genuine. Why? Because I don't ask for favours. I offer trades, quid pro quo: You do this for me, I do that for you,---this is how true Guanxi (關係) works, and I am a great believer in the Power Of Guanxi.

We are individuals as well as social animals. Having "good relations" is simply increasing the odds (back to probability again) of "success" in your journey through the world of similarly mortal, social individuals.

You should get out more, smell the roses. Your head seems to be lodged up so far up your own arse, that all you smell is your own shit. 😂🤣

@ 1142

>> I also like Matilah with insider info that's it be an Election Year. <<

I don't have that info. I don't see how it is relevant.

I used to love Chritsmas and CNY when I was a kid. We would get really killer hampers---from suppliers of my dad. My dad was a master at Guanxi, and throughout our young lives growing up, he badgered his kids on the importance of going out into the world and making as many friends as possible, and fosrtering those relationships. He told me the towkays he dealt with at the time Lee Kuan Yew was coming up told him "We don't care who gets into government. We just want to be left alone to make money".

The old timers were great at Guanxi. LIfe back then was a lot tougher. No internet. You actually had to meet REAL PEOPLE, shake their hands, break bread together, and do much more than just "stay in touch". You actually had to do things for each other, and help out whenever you were needed. And they would do the same for you, in your times of need. These were the old guys, all dead now. And sadly our culture has changed, as has the pace of life---especially business life. Everything is faster and shallower now. Relationships are temporary, and fleeting.

There you have it: Do you have Guanxi? Do you know how to make money? Can you sell? If you can do all of that, it is irrelevant WHO is in government.
