Seniors coping with job transition, boom or bane?

The topic of concern in the main media these few days is about how seniors are coping with job transition. Let me quote a few paras to give an idea what the discussion is all about.

‘A job change is not a disaster, it can open doors to opportunities to new fields…To profit from these developments and best tackle job change, we must first stay positive and motivated, trust in our abilities and believe there are more good years ahead.’

If I were a natural aristorcrat, the above is very meaningful. A job change is opening the door to new opportunities, to better and cosier jobs, to continue to get paid handsomely or even more.  This does not apply to the many PMETs who were laid off. What happened to them is more like this, ‘The next step is to get to work, research jobs of interest, apply for them confidently and not hesitate to seek help in doing so.’  And prepare to send 500 resumes with no replies over a year or more, and then give up.

And yes, how not to be confident when the next job is several notches down the line, from a PMET to a counter salesperson or a waiter. With the kind of experience PMETs have acquired, they must be absolutely confident in applying for the next job if they can get by their ego. This is the fault, forget about ego, a job is a job.  That is what many silly Singaporeans have been told and accepting this dreadful fate. Just be realistic with the expectations and ‘be receptive to other work as well as remuneration arrangements.’ It is not business as usual. All your training, degrees, experience is not worth a half baked, dunno got degree or fake degree foreigners. Do not question their credentials. You are expected to be stupid to accept them as your replacement even if they are fakes, with lower qualifications or degrees from Timbuktu.

Oh this part is best, ‘It pays to approach new jobs with the same hunger as we did our first job, except we have the benefit of experience and wisdom to accompany the application.’  I would say approach the jobs like those jobless from the third world countries. These people never have the same angst as our PMETs in job transitions. Our PMET’s job transition often is a nightmare except for the natural aristocrats when a shop keeper can end up as the CEO of a big corporation. The experience of the third world jobless job applicants is always a pleasure, from out of job to fully employed. From being paid in third world currency, at minimum wage scale to being paid in Singapore currency and at Singapore rate.  They are chasing their dreams and rainbows here but our PMETs are chasing to see who would accept the lowest rung job available, and temporary somemore.

Job transition for the foreign job applicants is such a great thing to happen, but a nightmare and humiliating experience to our PMETs. Why so lidat? Something is wrong somewhere? Something mysterious? Maybe the brains of our PMETs are overused, overtrained and no longer usable.  But must trained some more so that they can downgrade their expectations.

The demand is for clean, young and unused brains from the third world countries. To these third world job hunters, what job transition are they talking about? It is like a trip to paradise, a sweet dream turning into reality, finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Incompetent PME need to be replaced lah.Deserve no sympathy.
Didn't you people keep saying that that little boy's death was due to these so call professional's incompetency ?
If cannot handle the job well, that mean one should change profession. What's so humiliating about our so call PME driving taxi or become screwty guard.
Many that I know become PME because of paper ,connection or Plp but are no brainer.
Time for job transition.

This does not apply to the many PMETs who were laid off.
RB

So? But PAP still win even a by election with a minority candidate in a Chinese majority SMC, tio bo?

Unless the PMETs who were laid off become majority voters angry enough to vote Sinkies like Chee Soon Juan lah. But so far, and for decades, this did not happen.

There are good reasons why PAP made many foreign PMETs as citizens, and also to have a 10 million population target. MRT crowded and break down? So? Majority Sinkies still lan lan (no choice) vote for PAP what.

As long as PMETs who were laid off did not join opposition parties like SDP to make it strong and ready to be govt, they will continue to become taxi drivers and security guards.

But then maybe to them, becoming taxi drivers and security guards is a less evil choice than to join SDP. Even RB also never join, so that speaks volumes about joining SDP or any other opposition party.

Do you think this is very good advice for anyone who is recuperating from a stroke?

Those PMETs deserved to be where they are. They are mindless sheep. No self worth, no pride, no fighting spirit.

Of course not, if you are referring to Heng Swee Keat.

But for PAP, no worry, because they can find many Heng Swee Keats to take over the stroke stricken one. Just look how fast they found the replacement.

What are the employment laws here in Singapore?
How many months or years before an employer will sack a worker who has just suffered a stroke?

Is the length of time different for:
a. Work Permit holders
b. Employment Pass holders
c. Maids
d. Alien PMETs
e. Singaporean PMETs
f. Civil Service

Don't Give Up! Don't Give Up!

Worry not worry not!

Our govt is the BEST in the world.

Yes! The BEST! Yes! The BEST!

Our govt had introduced many many policies and developed many many
heavily subsidised training programmes aimed at seniors and retrenched
PMETs, so that these seniors/PMETs can get reemployment soon.

So, you see, how nice and caring is our govt!

It may not be a POT of GOLD waiting for you at the end of the rainbow,
but hopefully you still can find at least a tiny rice bowl!

All the best!

It's true.
Singaporeans get tuition as children.
As adults, Singaporeans get training & re-training.
That is why it's so easy to import Alien Talents from India to become our bosses.
Singaporeans do the work.
The Alien Indians get the high salary.

Do you think it's true that PAP is so happy with this arrangement that they happily signed CECA and will continue to open up more and more sectors of the Singapore economy to Alien Indians?

Do you think it is also true that Singaporeans are so happy with this arrangement that 70% voted for PAP in GE 2015?

Anonymous said...

Singaporeans deserved the garment they voted.

Anonymous said...

In 2015, 70% said YES YES YES to PAP!

In 2015, 70% are very very happy and said to PAP.......没有PAP, 哪有我, PAP 谢谢你!

That's why PAP is so goooooooood to our seniors and retrenched PMET.

Cheers.

The only time these 70% PAP voters will wake up when they find that out of four bread winning in the family, only one or none working.

Rest, RTS roam the streets or piece meal work only can buy piece meal meals.

Mortgage piling up. Whatever can sell already sold. Even bring grandma to Delta Romeo but Ah Nehs also dun want.

Stomachs hungry and no more 78$
Milk powder for the little ones.

Where have all the jobs gone? ?

Gone away with the Ah Nehs, Pinoy and Pinay and the Chow Ang mos.

In time, these vultures, hyenas will also employed their own to make up numbers and strengths.

Sinkies has to clean the shits after them in the restrooms and offered them face cleaning tissues.

A nation lost is hard to redeem.

Meanwhile seek refuge in Matland and have a head start there for your children as their value is much needed three than in your own country of birth.

Hopefully a day when we have Sin Au Yang So Kee to be the Saviour to reclaim Sinking Land again.

Do you think Singaporeans are the best trained slaves for Alien Indians?

Do you know that in Indonesia;
if a multi-national corporation appoint an Indian Alien Talent as the country manager;
All the local Indonesians will go on strike?
Do you think what I said is true?
Please ask your Indonesian friends to confirm or un-confirm what I said.

I am very grateful to the PAP government for my education and training.
As a result, I am very well qualified to work as a slave for all the Alien Indians that are being imported into Singapore to become CEOs.

Do you think our Alien Indian CEOs can shine in their work if they only had imported Indian slaves to depend on?
Do you think our PAP Ministers can run the country so well if they only had imported Indian slaves to do the work?

Three cheers for the Singaporean slaves.
We make our paper generals and Alien Indian CEOs look good.

Sad.

Saw an interesting article in HWZ(edmw) that a local bank is farming out
1500 jobs to a foreign country

Also found in the same article, a local IT business owner commented that....
“I thought the government was supporting local PMETs. But this move suggests
that the government is not sincere about the promises it makes to the local businesses. Maximizing profits is the order of the day!”.

YES, the key is maximizing profits! At the expense of PMETs?

Sad.

China's Xiaomi wanted to start a manufacturing company in India to build mobile phones. India approved the proposal but on condition that all the top employees must be Indians. It is like putting all the money there, including technology, for the Indians to do as they pleased. They think China so stupid. What if they pay themselves crazy or worst, runaway with everything, every dollar?

Guess which silly country put in money in the billions to start a bank in India to be run and managed be an all Indian management? Give the Indians the money to do as they pleased?

Virgo49 said...

Those countries who signed mutually agreed MOUs and what CECP with the two faced Indians are duds.

They do not open their economy to the outsiders.Only DUDs invest there to be swindled.

Stupidity has no cure and knows no bounds.

The problem of allowing excessive pmets to take up jobs in singapore is the result of stagnant salary.

In short, foreigners make jobs not worth a bowl of rice in singapore. eg there are workers willing to take $400pm, similar to NS men basic. Bangali can eat may be mixture of rice plus others. Sg citizens cannot: must have hawker foods, no restaurant and no food court. $400pm if accepted, then $800pm is supervisor pay perceived in the boss mind, $2000pm is the regional manager based in mumbai india.

So the whole company can only hire indians. No citizens can fit into the jobs at low low pay scale all based in S$. The elite scholars are happy to help companies to lower expectation of employees.

Example: a citizen used to earn $6k. After he is retrenched, he gets interview in such indian company offering $2k to do manager job in china, he would not accept it. If he asks for $5k, $1k less, the employer would tell him that s his ceo s allowance. Note allowance, may be car allowance is already $5k.

Sg elite scholars keep the salary low using foreigner policy has one very bad long term effect. Future generation will look at jobs as no value. If engineer can make on $2000pm, why the young bother to force the family to flock out $30k to study in the Uni to get engineering degree. Furthermore, half of his classmate in Nus or Ntu are not paying fee to study. They get scholarship from sg govt as foreigners talented students. So citizen young will find no use to work hard. Just dont bother to do professional training, as after training, the jobs only give $2k-3k a month forever. Not enough.

in the long run, all professionals in sg will be foreigners, mainly from Indian malaysian uni. Salaries for professional jobs are low. Citizens also dont bother to study professional knowledge. The elite scholars are happy. No one can know what wrong they have done. All goondu king, only know how to vote pap.

So you think all the foreigners working in Mum Bai Financial Centre (MBFC) are earning $400 and can afford to drive Mercedes and living in condos or landed properties?

More than twenty years ago when I started working, many organizations were already firing older local staff instead of young foreign staff. This has been around for many years and everywhere in this world. Just remember - When one is old, one is out unless one is elite breed.
