Constitutional Commission for the Elected President appointed

Hsien Loong has appointed a Constitutional Commission to relook at the Elected President Scheme. The 9 members of the commission are:

  • Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon
  • Justice Tay Yong Kwang, Judge, Supreme Court
  • Mr Eddie Teo, Chairman, Public Service Commission
  • Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, Member, Presidential Council for Minority Rights
  • Professor Chan Heng Chee, Chairman, Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, Singapore University of Technology and Design
  • Mr Chua Thian Poh, Chairman and CEO, Ho Bee Land
  • Mr Philip Ng, CEO, Far East Organization
  • Mr Peter Seah, Chairman, DBS Bank
  • Mr Wong Ngit Liong, Chairman and CEO, Venture Corporation

The terms of reference of the Commission include the qualifying process and the eligibility criteria for the Presidency candidates, the framework governing the exercise of the President’s custodial powers, including whether the views of the Council of Presidential Advisers can be given more weight, and recommendations to ensure that minorities have the chance to be periodically elected to the Office of the President.

The big question is whether these eminent men and woman will look at the Constitutional right of every citizen to be eligible as a candidate for the Presidency and the right to elect a president of their choice and not to elect one from a pre selected few candidates that belonged to the rich and powerful class of citizens and chosen by the natural aristocrats. It is not in the terms of reference of the Commission to look into and to protect these rights of the people. In this city, if it is not spoken specifically, it will not be addressed, just like the U turn sign. Only got U turn sign then can make U turn.

Why should the rich and powerful decide the first cut, have the first call on who is eligible and qualified to be a presidential candidate by virtue of his wealth and status in society, the natural aristocrat class, and not by virtue of his fundamental right as a citizen of this country, regardless of race, language and religion, money and social status? Is there a special class of citizens that have a special right to be qualified to be a presidential candidate and other classes of citizens do not have this right?

Is the right of the citizens protected by the Constitution or would this right be legislated away? Some are born more equal than others in this democratic society based on justice and equality?

Any MP, NCMP or politician thinks he/she has something to say about this? Or they know that they should not be saying anything at all, not the right thing to say, not the right time to open their mouths? It will be just another fait accompli by default? The non 'natural aristocrats', ie the commoners, are unfit to be president of the country? No right to be the Elected President of the country, a position with no executive power and not much different from being a ceremonial president? The only condition that rules out an American from running for the President of the USA, the most powerful man in the world, is to be born in the USA. Why is there a need to disqualify 99% of the population on the mythical notion of rogue potential? Commoners are more likely to be rogues and the natural aristocrats are not? Please do not insult the integrity of the commoners. They are the ones that elected the ruling party to power.

Whose interest would the changes in the Elected President Scheme served?

Four legs are good, two legs are better!

Age and Citizenship requirements - US Constitution, Article II, Section 1

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

Face it, the elites are the one who wield disproportional amount of power and shape the political landscape of the country. Not the people.

The task of the elites is to protect the people against themselves.

PAP have not been doing it very well since Goh Keng Swee left.

How about a Commission of Inquiry to find out why Singapore's petrol prices does not go down in the face of overwhelming supply?

Inquire into something more useful for a change.

Rich and powerful can also be rogues. Bigger rogues, more dangerous rogues. More clever rogues.

The elephant in the room:

What is the purpose of the Singapore President?
Elected President or Nominated President ... how does he benefit Singaporeans?

"Why should the rich and powerful decide the first cut, have the first call on who is eligible and qualified to be a presidential candidate by virtue of his wealth and status in society,..."
RB

Then why should the 70% decide who should be the govt? Are the 70% all rich and powerful? Statistically, there could a lot of ordinary Sinkies among the 70%.

One Stone Kills Two Birds!

Why waste so much to discuss about the President post/election?

Very simple. No need election!

We only need GE to elect MPs.

From the MPs, just appoint someone to be the President, another to be First Deputy President and another to be the Second Deputy President.

Problem solved?!

Please think-out-of-the-square-box!

Cheers.

A big Constitutional Commission to waste time over a trivial issue that nobody much cares about.
But the truth is that the Fixer son of the horrible man who passed away simply wants it his way. With a very narrow and restrictive terms of reference, the Commission will do his bidding of changing the qualifying criteria to exclude Tan Cheng Bock from the next PE. That will leave the KFC chiak Liao Bee man without any real competition. My bet is there will be no contest.

This is a step in the right direction. As I've said over and again: a popularly elected president is BAD NEWS and a potential threat to the nation's security.

Singapore is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC and the parliament is a REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY i.e. voters elect members to vote on policy matters. LHL's proposal is in keeping with the spirit of this representative democracy.

>> Are there a special class of citizens that have a special right to be qualified to be a presidential candidate and other classes of citizens do not have this right? <<

It's not a matter of "rights". It's a matter of ability and social status: i.e. those who've "achieved" can back up their achievements by hard proof. For e.g.: I feel much better that someone like Far East's Phil Ng being on the board than some low social status, non-achieving ding-dong who is not even good enough to compete with foreign labour, and has Ah Loong chasing him for money he used to bet using the numbers of the vehicles in last fatal accident.

Got social status? High or low?

Tip for the day: No such thing as "egalitarianism". But if you still feel much "happier" believing in myths, carry on. Far be it for me to disrupt you from your delusion. :-)

Here is an example of "real world" questioning
- Janet Yellen getting deep fried yesterday over a criminal leak

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-02-10/here-exchange-left-stunned-janet-yellen-looking-deer-headlights

The American Congressman don't seem to understand the process of 65 man-years to come back with an answer
- seems to be very upset with Janet Yellen after only one year

5 minute video
- well worth watching
- Janet Yellen must be wishing she gets a million dollar salary to put up with this type of questioning
............................................

Today, during Yellen's appearance before the House Financial Services committee, Duffy finally had enough, and in a heated exchange asked Yellen what on legal authority is the Fed exerting privilege to ignore a Congressional probe into what is clearly a criminal leak, one which has nothing to do with monetary policy and everything to do with the Fed providing material, market moving information to its favorite media and financial outlets.

P.S. The US Constitution doesn't mean jack shit in the Singapore context. If it did, I'd be keeping firearms in my Singapore home (2nd Amendment), and fucking every church, temple and mosque in public. (1st Amendment)

No, we don't have that kind of freedom as a nation.

Why?
Uncle Matilah. Why we don't have that kind of freedom as a nation?

Is it because Chinese culture or Asian culture are slave cultures?
Is it because Asian values is inferior to American values?
Does Asian culture and Asian values promote a slavish behaviour in Singaporeans?

Why not shut down parliament?
Just have an elected Emperor can already lah.

@ good question 1135:

>> Why?

Short, most direct answer: I DON'T KNOW, and I doubt anyone does. I do suspect culture has alot to do with it.

The best we can do is construct hypotheses as to "why". However it is hard to confirm or reject such hypotheses because it is hard to get data, and even if you get data, how are you going to analyse it and tease out some sort of "certainty"?

US Law has "protected speech": for e.g.: you can say "Obama is a traitor and has ripped off this cuntry!", and anyone who physically stops your or harms you or threatens you is breaking the law. However in Singapore if you say "LHL ripped off CPF", next thing you know, you are being sued until backside koyak.

The US Constitution SECURES the freedom of the individual IN LAW. In Singapore the law can be used to secure you in Changi or bankruptcy court.

Who appoints the Panel of Presidential Advisers?
Since the Panel Members are appointed and NOT selected by the People, will the Panel Members NOT be beholden to their MASTER(s)?
Why should they(the Advisers) be bothered with the People?

As said before, monkeys will only follow their monkey king whom they take his instructions. That is; the Appointed Members from the PRESIDENTIAL ADVISORS TO THE PRESIDENT HIMSELF, SHALL ONLY take instructions from their MASTER(s) THAT APPOINTS and SELECTED THEM.

MONKEYS SHALL BE MONKEYING AROUND for sometimes as there are about 70% of 猴子猴孙/smaller monkeys around.
Brace yourself for more MONKEY BUSINESSES IN THE COMING YEARS AS MORE ALIEN MONKEYS WILL BE RECRUITED TO JOIN THE PACK.

If these 9 people are qualified, they do NOT need to be appointed.
What's the Criteria used?
Let's just say that they are
parts of the Establishment.

Do they know the Singapore
Constitution and are in position
to comment on it?
Should be yes, as they are in
position to help draft and advise
on it(Sin Constitution). On top
of it, they could have the services
of legal experts at their disposal.

What else they are not qualified in?

I dare say that in this Blogsite alone, there is no difficulty finding calibres fit for Prime Minister and any other cabinet appointments.

Not in merits of qualifications; Atilah Singapura, Agongkia and Redbean himself are more than able to take on any top positions. They all possess
very important personal qualities in commonsense, righteous, knowledgeable in international affairs and exposures. Most importantly, they are passionate about humanity and not just Stinkies alone; their compassion is for all living beings.

Atilah Singapura stands out amongst the Lot. He is widely travelled, well read, scientific and most impressive of all, well exposed geographically to different cultures and human behaviours. Cannot find any equals in the cabinet thus far.

Rb has stated a fact here and that is; how the hell the Citizens are excluded from participating in the governance and the running of their own country
by the Current Rulers.
