The contrasting style of Modi and Deng Xiaoping

Narendra Modi is in Singapore on a 2 day official visit starting on 23 Nov. Globe trotting Modi has been awarded the Asian of the Year by the ST for having met the most leaders in his first year in office, his greatest achievement as a PM. By now he probably has met all the leaders of the world several times over and probably a Guinness Record is in order for this great feat.  Modi’s visits anywhere is always met by large crowds of the India diaspora and an air of great expectations with his eloquent speeches of great promises of India become the next superpower and an economic powerhouse.

Modi’s visit to Singapore is no different and a 100,000 diaspora is awaiting him at Chennai Business Park, oops, I mean Changi Business Park. He is like a rock star and will be received with all the pomp and pageantry of a rock star.

In contrast, Deng Xiaoping was like a hermit, a leader that hardly made any trip overseas. Deng also did not make spectacular speeches and though his visit to Singapore did not end up speaking to 100,000 Chinese diaspora, the media did give him a good coverage, but not in the scale of Modi. It was strictly business, he came, he saw and he noted.

In that strategic trip to Singapore, great ideas were formed in the minds of Deng. If Singapore could do it, China could do better. And in Singapore he saw a working model that could kick start a new China that he was opening up to the world. After his return from this rare trip out of China, he sent delegations after delegations of Chinese officials to study what Singapore did and took the blueprints home for more analyses. The rest is history.

From what he saw in Singapore, it gave him enough ideas and motivation on what he wanted to turn China into. The rest was true grit and execution. Not many people would want to acknowledge it, that a single trip out of China could have such a great impact on the redevelopment of China. To a good mind, it only takes a spark, to ignite a dream and turn it into a reality. That is the difference. Deng launched a powerful wave of reforms never seen in anywhere else for centuries.

Modi would still be travelling around the world to make eloquent speeches of great promises. Would this trip to Singapore ignite in him a spark to transform India into a modern nation like what China is today? Maybe Modi could do more, with many more ideas he collected from all this overseas trips and the inspirations from many more countries.

Apologies for those who think Singapore should take full credit for the modernization of China. No, Singapore was just a catalyst to spark a dream. The rest are hard work and due diligence to turn a dream into a reality, to motivate a nation of 1.3b people to work for the China Dream.  Only the Chinese could do this to rebuild their country to what it is today. If it is so easy, all the countries that wanted to emulate Singapore would also be great successful stories. Other than China, no one could do it the way China did, and in a scale unmatched over a mere 3 decades..

Turning a country into an economic powerhouse of modernity is not about eloquent speeches and copying a model. It is not so simple as that. When would Modi stop travelling, return to India and start working, to rebuild India into another economic powerhouse? Perhaps Singapore will be his last stop to build up all the ideas he needed to create another mammoth Asian economic giant.

India is a vast country. If he travelled around in India, he will see what* is lacking and needs to be done pronto. But that is not as enjoyable as travelling round the world and receiving the adulation of his subjects to his speeches of HOPE.

Saycheese

*Crap, and cheap underemployed labour are in abundance.
Create employment and improve GDP employing more scavengers and nightsoil workers?

India has great power ambition. Read the commentaries in the media, it is all about power and projection of power. They now also want to ensure freedom of navigation in East China Sea and South China Sea, not just the Indian Ocean. They want to check on the Chinese Navy and their activities in the western Pacific Ocean.

Don't underestimate this big power to be.

Since the Day of Huangdi-黄帝→Qin Shihuang秦始皇 to the 3 Centuries of Manchu Rule清朝, China had many glorious era long before anyone knows about this tiny rock.

To accord or allude modern China to Deng Xiao Ping taking a page from his Singapore Visit could be anomalous.

China is what it is today simply because Mao Zedong had the Chinese united and stopped the Chinese in the Mainland fighting each other.
Chairman Mao was able to galvanize his People to work for the Country祖国 and not for their individual glory. That makes China what it is today.

It is laughable to even think that China modelled Singapore's system. That's LKY's claim. In reality, Deng Xioaping had to overcome much objection from his own communist party to open up China.

In the 1980s, Deng took the opportunity to meet up West powers including Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. He was the one who introduced the idea of capitalism to China by inviting the West. A radical move by a communist leader then. His visit to Singapore was incidental. If at all, Sg govt saw the potential of China and simply wanted to ride China's economic rise. At most, you can give credit to Sg govt for its foresight. But never should you claim that Sg is a catalyst, let alone an influencer of China's growth (like what LKY wrongly claimed).

That said, many Chino-philes bathe in the glory of the economic success. Many pro-capitalists also claim that secularism, democracy and free flow of capital is the success factor. But these same people who applaud China's economic growth fail to highlight the downside. Corruption still exists, in fact at a larger scale due to the higher amounts of money that is flowing in and out. Non-ethics and cheating in business goes up, which includes fake ingredients in foodstuff that is detrimental to health. Finally, let's also not forget how the inflow of businesses and money suddenly triggers the very familiar warlike attitude in the central govt. Isn't it all about economics and money that China wants to hold onto power like controlling Tibet, Xinjiang and Spratly?

China's economic growth has nothing to do with Deng's visit to Sg. If Deng had ignored Sg, China would still be what it is today. Sg on the other hand may have lost a lot of business with China if not for Deng's visit. Singaporeans who are Chino-philes should stop flattering themselves that we are responsible for China's success in any way.

Modi & senior people in india knows exactly what is wrong & lacking in india. The problem is that there are too many chiefs and vested interests among powerful people & entities in india. Too much corruption, "old boys' club" mentality, money politics, business interests, and the elites being happy with status quo. Indian govt not powerful enough like PAP or china CCP to purge & hang & shoot & jail top-level corruptors.

Deng Xiaoping was lucky that (1) CCP govt has absolute power & control over all army, finance, social apparatus in china, and (2) vast millions of sheep cheenas who are willing to take orders & sacrifice time/money/family/energy just becoz govt says so.

It is very easy to turn a country in a common direction if you can command the people and turn them into mindless robots e.g. china, Nazi Germany, former USSR. There were all very high GDP countries, at least in the initial years.

Similarly, if there is a PAP-like govt in North Korea, that country will easily become an economic powerhouse within 1 generation and easily overtake China in terms of GDP and pace of economic expansion/modernisation.

I can see all the different views about China, India and Singapore. That's normal. The only abnormal part is for anyone to claim that one views it the correct and others are wrong. If things are so simple, everyone will be called a genius.

I hope PAP Ministers will promote the ideas of CPF and subsidized HDB flats ... and how they benefit the citizens.
The travel weary Modi needs a joke and a good laugh after so many months on the road.

Nepal has accused India of meddling in its internal affairs.

Apparently India is very buay song when NEPAL adopted the new charter in the constitution that was expected by many Nepalese from more than 8 years.

The 2015 Nepal fuel crisis, which began on 23 September 2015, is an economic and humanitarian crisis which has severely affected Nepal and its economy. As a landlocked nation, Nepal imports all of its petroleum supplies from India. Roughly 300 fuel trucks enter from India on a normal day, but this has dwindled to a sporadic passage of 5–10 fuel trucks daily since the start of the crisis, though shipments of perishables like fruits and vegetables have generally been allowed to pass.[1]

The government of Nepal has accused India of imposing an undeclared blockade. India has denied the allegations, stating the supply shortages have been imposed by Madheshi protesters within Nepal, and that India has no role in it. wiki

You believe that Indians they have nothing to do with it? They have been bullying their small neighbours for decades, blackmailing them and squeezing their balls.

Nepal is lucky that China is able to come in and help

On 11 November, Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon reiterated his "concern over the obstruction of essential supplies on the Nepal-India border. Acute shortages in fuel supplies continue to impede planned deliveries to earthquake-affected villages in Nepal," said spokesman Stephane Dujarric. "The Secretary-General underlines Nepal's right of free transit, as a landlocked nation as well as for humanitarian reasons, and calls on all sides to lift the obstructions without further delay. wiki

One thing will help india, sg must send all those talents from his country back to india to help rebuild india and stop accepting new ones as it is a brain drain for india. This is a win win for both people.

A nation that lasts more than 5000 year cannot be without the quality of its' inhabitants.

Culturally, Indians have been one of the most advanced civilization. It's cultural influences had travelled far and wide and even into neighbouring China.

Had India and Indonesia not constraint in developments by Religious diversities and conflicts, they could have developed well economically. Nevertheless, in the internet era, they will do well soon as they depend more on technology to develop rather than depend on their faiths.

Anon @ 9.12pm, RB keeps posting Chinophile posts. You are making a Indianophile post. The biggest setback in Indian historical culture is the caste system. Very divisive. You are looking down on the religious aspects because you think your Bramin caste is so atas. So you look down on others. But that is exactly what kept India from developing further. Looking down on others.

When an apple dropped on the head, a hungry person would say, good, got apple to eat.
An idiot would curse the apple tree.
A genius like Newton would think and say, Gravity.

An ordinary event, a picture, can mean different things to different people.

Many leaders came to Singapore and all they saw was a green and clean modern city.

Deng Xiaoping saw what he could do to his country. Singapore did not teach him anything. He taught himself from what he saw in Singapore. He saw possibilities. He made possibilities happened.

There is a condo by the name of Orchard Bel Air, more a jail than a luxury condo, as most of the residents are from that shit land called India and most are from upper caste and have imported the usual upperty snob attitude to Singapore.
Pray God if you have to make a visit, as you will be escorted like a criminal to visit the resident. From nonsense rules like where to park your car and 2 pair of eyes always on you when making visits, you will have a very uncomfortable and unpleasant visit.
These Indian trash should just fuck back to the shithole they came from!
