A new trend and a new normal

This guy came to me and offered me his name card. My God, was I impressed. Below his name is a long list of credentials. Let me just list them down to show you how well qualified he is.
B. Eng, Masters Computer Science, Ph D Eng, Ph D Science, Ph D Social Engineering, Ph D Technology.

I asked him if he was in senior management. He said no, just an engineer. But his boss was very impressed and even asked him how to get these Ph Ds to add on to his name card. He said his boss only got a B Eng from NUS. Now his boss felt malu looking at his name card.

I said soon he should be taking over his boss position. He said no lah. He was employed only because of his first degree which was genuine and from a reputable university in Geylang, the rest he bought it from the degree mills. Oh, you mean degree mills degrees can also be printed in the name card. He assured me can. He said he listed them in his CVs also. But not to worry, the rest just for show show only. The boss knew he did not get them by the normal and proper academic route. But it is okay. No worry, no crime. Not a crime.

This is the new fashion in Singapore. Even one government agency did not find any problem with it, till now. He said if don’t believe go and ask IDA. This type of thing is very normal one. If I don’t have a long list, employers would say I got no relevant skills set compare to FTs. FTs all got very long list of degrees and many many skills set.

I was so happy that I too went to get a few Ph Ds to add onto my name card. My name card now is printed on two sides. Too many degrees from University of Cempedak, University of Tekka, University of Telok Blangah, University of ….Oops, I can’t remember, so many of them that I don’t even know what they are. But shiok, damn shiok. Damn impressive. Whenever I meet anyone I will hand them my name card.  Lan par oso song.

You dummy. You don't know what is happening in IDA meh? No need to bluff them. They don't care real or fake degrees. Why you have to think 40 years ago when it is happening now?

Or was that how you bluff your botartcheh parents in law to marry their botartcheh daughter?

Good morning Dr Chua Chin Leng!

I hope you can accept me for
addressing you as Dr Chua before
you get your degrees and PhDs from
DontKnowWhich University.

Seriously, are you sure it is ok
in Singapore to print behind your
name the degrees & PhDs obtained
from DontKnowWhich University?

Is this what we want?

Here fake! There fake! Everywhere fake!

If this really the case.......

Sad! Really Very Sad!

Aiyo, long time ago, need to get from what mills??

As long as you suck up to the PAP and in business that they deemed to be successful, you are also been conferred a Doctorate!

Don't believe?? See even beauty saloons, slimming saloons, hairdressing ah kwa saloons also put DR in front of their names on name cards and what's not's.

So many honorary degrees of professors and doctorates been conferred on these reputable businessmen and women who suck up to the PAP.

That's why they tell true blue Singaporeans no need to go unis for degrees as they knew all these are cheap cheap cheap.

Give scholarships to the foreign refugees who clamored for them.

Sinkies just study ITE will do! Taxi drivers and hawkers earned more than professors.

Heard of a taxi driver who earned 10K per month and roast pork hawker sold their business for millions of dollars to the yuppies entrepreneurs??

This is the new norm.

Also, by the way, you saw or not??

They invited Honorable Men and Women from different countries and conferred on them various colours robes in their UNIs calling them don't know what sorts of Ranks that they do not need to study one!

Just Adults after coming of age, become children again and play masak, masak.

Conferring titles on you and and me making merry and merry go round making themselves happy to keep boredom away.

For these high class influential people, they cannot like ordinary beans go to Geylang and chase away their boredom and let go their temperature.

Like any con, it can only work on those who themselves subscribe to the idea that degree/ tertiary qualifications are some sort of "gold standard" to judge oneself and fellow human beings one comes into contact with.

The proper terms for the placement of educational qualifications after one's name is "post nominal letters", aka "letters after the name".

These days the idea of trying to impress people by volunteering too much information IMO is DANGEROUS. There is enough incidences of identity theft, and digital hacking going on to make people like question the validity of being "too public". I still say being "under the radar" is probably the smartest thing.

And no need to volunteer educational qualifications lah. Most people are already clued on to degree mills, so that if you have too many post nominal letters, it becomes very suspicious, lading skeptical people to check up on you and your alleged "skills".

Bad idea lah. Usually things that go hand in hand with boosting one's EGO are very bad ideas.

I mean, how much about yourself do you really want people to know?
