Do we need foreigners to win medals?

The Singapore Athletic Association SAA has brought back Chinese sports woman Du Xianhui to don Singapore colours to win medals for Singapore. The shot putter is definitely a medal hopeful and will keep Singapore flag flying. The question is whether this is the way to go, spending public money on foreigners to win medals and glory for Singapore. Are we so desperate to win medals to the extent of buying athletes and sports people to do that for us? Should we not use the money to develop and train our own citizens to mount the winner’s rostrum?

Are the money well spent? Are the glories well earned, something that we can be proud of? When would Singapore grow up from this third world mentality of winning glories in sports to claim honours for the country, that we are also good in sports? So what if our own athletes cannot win medals if they are not good enough. So what if these foreigners win medals for us?

Where is the achievement? What is so great about such medals? Why spent such money when money can be put to better use for the betterment of our own citizens? How much is the total spent annually on foreigners to win medals? Would it not be more meaningful to pay for coaches and trainers to train our citizens instead? The way we are going, we are going to be dependent on foreigners forever, as this is a sure short cut for medals.

Are we so hard up for medals?

Singaporeans do not need foreigners to win medals. If we can't win fair & square, then let's not bother trying to win at all.

It's PAP ideology that requires us to win medals by any means necessary.

I say let's use the money to benefit needy Singaporean families.

Anything to "enhance" the Singapore brand name, is fair game. This kind of fucked thinking can only come from people who don't have to spend their own money, and thus can just make decisions on whims and fancies, and can do so without having a clue about market competition.

Those in the private sector running their own show with their own money will advise against "overselling" the brand name, because it leads to resentment and the natural tendency for people to "tune out" the noise.

Anyway, it is the role of governments to throw money at nonsense. They are not the private sector, where funding is limited and has to be carefully apportioned. Government has no problems raising funds because it has the monopoly on TAXATION, which means it is silly to assume that government will be PRUDENT.

Who say cannot? You daft is it?

Make them instant citizens, can already.

And make a lot of them citizens, for sure they will even vote PAP and outnumber the Sinkies who don't vote PAP.

Are the adolescent ministers still telling the sports associations to buy medals and the public still paying for them?

Would there be a minister to say, stop this nonsense?

Or would there be a sports official to tell the ministers that enough is enough and we should spend our money wisely, on Singaporeans?

What we need is some wise men, not unthinking men.

The Sports School in existence for so many years and yet no able TRUE blue Singaporean sportsmen

Waste of funds. Better close them down

If foreigners are better, of course choose foreigners lah.

Many Sinkies even choose foreigners as husbands or wives what. Obviously they think foreigners are better what.

So what's wrong with foreigners to win medals for Sinkieland?

Hi RB,

You are flogging the dead horse lah! This issue was hot when we brought in PRC to play ping pong for us. The netizens made them so unwelcome that the most prominent one LJW has retired happily in Beijing with her son and our millions!

This is sports, hobby, a past time. Anyone wants to enjoy his hobby like collecting medals, please pay yourself. Don't use public money, esp to pay foreigners to play.

"Don't use public money, esp to pay foreigners to play."
Anon June 20, 2013 1:47 pm

But PAP has the mandate from 60% voters to use public money to pay foreigners to play what.

And of course including paying themselves million $ salaries, tio bo?

They used this tactic to spite sinkies. They used up all the monies for training foreigners, giving jobs to foreigners and then they turned around and said that sinkies are lousy, daft, no good etc. People must learn that this kind of regime is disgusting and we should terminate them with immediate effect without the need to give any notice period or compensation.

"But PAP has the mandate"

- So what if they have the mandate? The mandate is only a probation period just like any employment letter. If they cannot make it, they should step down or get a termination from the people and hold another election. People should sign a petition for a new election. If they still refuse to step down, we should all go to the international court.

Win a medal for what? can save lives? can save the world? This regime should stop behaving like a child and drag the people into it. Even the neighbour indomee said so.

(“Singapore should not be behaving like a child and making all this noise,” Agung Laksono)

Singaporeans whether it in swimming and soccer, when they reach the peak and critical moment of the sport career would dragged away due to PAP inflexible law, to be enlisted in the forces for 2 years followed by numberous disruptions through out their lives.

It time to boycott inflexible policy.
