A higher level of political maturity

A glance at the winners in yesterday's election quickly reminds one of the numerous political prisoners among them. Lim Kit Siang, Lim Eng Guan, Tian Chua, and the currently in prison M Manoharan who won while in captivity. Then the indestructible Anwar Ibrahim, so corruption and sodomy stuck on his face, stood triumphantly on the rostrum with his wife and daughter, both convincingly won their wards. And there were many other ex political detainees who were and are going into Parliament. What does all these say to the Malaysian political system or to the credibility of drum up charges of political detainees? The people were simply pissed off by such wild accusations, even if some are true, and chose to denounce the regime in power and their excesses to abuse power. Political criminals are no criminals. Fictitious political crimes are no crimes. The Malaysian political system is much more mature than ours. The Malaysian electorate are much more mature than ours. The Malaysian ruling party, on this occasion, is also more mature than ours. At least they did not say their electorate is stupid to vote for the opposition. I will retract this if they start to kiss the kris and threaten violence.

The great hope for S'pore is that its people remain, as a generalisation, as A-political as they are.

When you have politics, you are going to get gang warfare.

The western democracies are even more "mature" - look at the deep divisions in society everytime elections come around.

As a side issue, Anwar's daughter needs to take off her clothes and pose for us. This will definitely make the world a better place - if for only awhile!

anwar is blessed with a good wife and a good daughter. give the man some respect.

we still need to develop our system to be less vindictive and more willingness to accept the opposition as worthy opponents and friends.

I agree with you redbean. There will always be differences of opinion, but do not destroy a person politically, financially and destroying his family ties as well. That is not a human being.

I seriously doubt S'pore politics will ever evolve to be as "mature" and "compassionate" as one might hope.

The PAP has always subscribed to the "winner take all" idea.

our govt is still working at it, to be more compassionate and inclusive. this kind of things take time to implement. and there is the mindset to change too.

yes, let's be kinder to people who offer themselves to serve the people. i think they are more driven than those waiting to be invited. or worst, those who were reluctant to serve but...

Since when was their motivation purely "to serve the people", when the salaries offered are outrageously high?

i cringed at the thought of how politicians fried each other, or the winner fried the losers.

Once in awhile the gods deliver unto us an assassin who'll succeed in riding the world of just one more lying, colluding, evil politician.
